A sketch of Zozo

Zozo, otherwise known as the Ouija Board Demon or the Red-Faced Demon, is the demon allegedly summoned through the use of Ouija boards and other forms of spiritual communication, like seances: he is a symbolism of Christianity's fear/objection to the occult.

Overview[]

Zozo is a fallen angel banished from Heaven eons ago by God. After his fall, Zozo became a powerful demon in Hell, believed to be part of Satan's court.

Zozo's activities traces some roots back to the early 1900’s when an article was published about the demon. In the article, the character Brook Kenilworth has her soul taken by her husband named “Zozo.” In fact, a book by the name of Dictionnaire Infernal, is considered to be one of the first mentions of Zozo.

He is rumoured to have been the demon who possessed Roland Doe when the boy used an Ouija board. Zozo and the possession were written about in a book called The Exorcist under the name Pazuzu which in turn inspired the modern version of Pazuzu, who comes from Babylonian culture.

Appearance[]

Zozo is a tall, muscular demon with black skin, coarse fur on his legs, dark cloven hooves and a devilish tail. His face is black with large tints of red because he paints red all over his face. Zozo has long, spidery claws at the end of his fingers and has large, demonic yellow-gold eyes with black pupils. He is easily distinguished by his red-painted face and a crackling sound that occurs upon his presence.

Personality[]

Zozo is often said to mimic the voices of the dead who the user of the Ouija board wishes to talk to. He is a cruel, sadistic demon who likes preying on people's insecurities and fears such as delighting in telling them they will die soon. He even mimics other spirits, oftentimes pretending he is three different spirits at once.

He can play on psychics, for instance, if a psychic is adamant that there are only two ghosts in the building, Zozo will confuse them by claiming there are nine ghosts instead. He will also add confusing scenarios by stating he is the ghost of a little boy ghost and that he is afraid of a malevolent spirit haunting the place.
