Yuggoth

Yuggoth.

Yuggoth also known as Iukkoth, is a mysterious planet located on verge of Earth's solar system, in either the Kuiper Belt, Scattered Disk or even as far away as the Oort Cloud. The planet holds a colony of Mi-go, a race of fungoid, crustacean-like extraterrestrials, and several of the Ogdru Hem have also resided on it.

Description[]

While some sources state Yuggoth to be the planet Pluto itself, conflicting accounts place it as a colossal trans-Neptunian world twice the size of Jupiter; whatever the truth, Yuggoth lies on the very fringes of the solar system.

Moons[]

There are three different moons on the planet.

  • Nithon is a cloud-laden moon of Yuggoth. It is covered by fungi and has luminescent clouds that block all sunlight.
  • Thog and Thok are twin moons of Yuggoth. Very little is known about these moons, though Thog is said to be a pitch-black world. On the surface of Thok is the fabled Ghooric Zone—a green-litten cavern containing a putrid lake where "puffed shoggoths splash".

History[]

Background[]

Yuggoth Ruins

According to the Revelations of Gla'aki, Yuggoth was the birthplace of a now-vanished species of aliens whose abandoned cities of black stone and emerald pyramids still litter the cold world. Instead of water, the planet is partially covered in oceans and rivers of a warm, black, tar-like substance, it's surface is scoured by savage winds, and the whole dark planet's appearance is enough to eventually drive a man insane. There are also Relics of the Elder Race within and a pit which might be “the Pit of Shoggoths”.

Since the extinction of the original Yuggothians, a number of entities have made their home there; the Ogdru Jahad Cxaxukluth and his family settled in an enormous pit there, but all bar Cxaxukluth have since moved on. The alien Mi-go have also established a colony on Yuggoth, erecting their city on the edge of the pit inhabited by the Outer God, which means that they must periodically evacuate during those times when Cxaxukluth raises its eldritch head to the surface. Yog-Sothoth is known as "The Beyond One" on Yuggoth. Daoloth is also worshipped.

Resting Place of the Old Ones[]

Yuggoth is a major stopping-off point for the Ogdru Hem on their way to Earth. Yuggoth has its own mini-solar system including Zaman, Nithon, the binary planet Thog & Thok and the Ghooric Zone. It orbits at ninety degrees from the plane of the elliptical. It is the natal home of an "Elder Race" of Yuggothians who died out before the planet became an “outpost” of the Mi-Go territory. A dark inhospitable world; its surface is ravaged by high winds, while its "seas" and "rivers" consist of a warm, oily substance which flows sluggishly under basalt bridges. Cities, towers and mines exist on both land and sea.

Na'morha is a named city on Yuggoth. The artifact known as the Shining Trapezohedron is stated to have been created on Yuggoth. The Black Seal of Iraan also comes from Yuggoth. The planet is a source of lagh-metal.

Trivia[]

  • Russell's Guide interprets Yuggoth as a group of nine, Outer God-like entities who worship Azathoth, on top of which the Mi-go have constructed an artificial surface.
  • If Yuggoth is indeed Pluto it would presumably share Pluto's location in the Kuiper Belt. Pluto was the only Kuiper Belt Object to be discovered during Lovecraft's lifetime; the next KBO would not be discovered until 1992.
  • The real Pluto has a region named the Cthulhu Macula shaped like a whale following an online poll from "creatures related to underworld mythologies."
