The Yamato is Vergil's trademark dark-forged katana and a legendary blade that once belonged to his father Sparda the Legendary Dark Knight. It was created by Sparda when he split his power in three fragments and was given to Vergil as a keepsake.
Overview[]
Yamato once belonged to Vergil's father, Sparda who split his immense power into three pieces. When Sparda first rebelled against his masters, and was fresh from his defeat of Mundus and his armies, he saw that the method required to seal the Gate of Hell which was operated by Mundus and his armies that channels the energies of the Convergence would waste too much time and effort and one where he could not allow another's blood to be spilled for the spell to properly take effect and seal off the Gate.
In response to this, Sparda split his power, fragmenting it into three pieces, with among these three being the Yamato itself, embodying a "god of death". The Yamato was created to counter the dimensional energies of the Convergence as Sparda feared that a simple spell would result in devastating after effects. The Yamato would be used to effectively destroy the Gateways without catastrophic blowbacks in the process while also being used to combat the Kings of Hell who held their place by the Gateways as a means to weaken their link to the material plane. Several thousand years later, the sword would be used by Sparda against Absalom alongside Trevor and Sypha, with the Blood God developing a fear of the sword itself. Eventually, in the modern age, it was given to Vergil as a memento.
Appearance[]
The Yamato is typical Japanese katana. The tsukamaki handle has pattern closer to a real katana, giving it the traditional diamond shape in the negative space. There is a dragon on the pommel/kashira, and the rim fittings from throughout the sword have flowing line patterns in gold; gold dragon styled menuki are inserted underneath the tsukamaki to allow for the fingers to grip.
The tsuba/handguard is gold and a deep navy blue, shaped like an octagon with two trapezoidal halves, each with gold dot pattern patches and in a grove like motif with gold rings, inside of which are various circles in clusters of three, arranged in triangular patterns, and the gold habaki/fuller is also with a similar embossed pattern. The hamon featured is a kawazuko choji or tadpole head clove flower styled hamon as similar to those found on blades historically made by Osafune Nagamitsu. The blade has also been given prominent temper lines.
Powers and Abilities[]
Yamato is far sharper than ordinary blades, and is imbued with tremendous demonic power. The sword is said to be able to cut through anything, even the very fabric of space itself, so much so that it can also cut through the Infinite Corridor itself which is only possible since the Yamato possesses immense power. It is also noted to be even sharper than the Muramasa Blade which was able to slice through Fleurety's seemingly indestructible skin. This ability is shown primarily through the sword's ability to create portals for its wielder to travel through. The sword was specifically designed to counteract the immense dimensional energies emitted by the Convergence whereupon it was being channeled through the Seven Gates of Hell.
Vergil utilizes an ability called Judgement Cut in which he draws and swings so fast that Yamato does not appear to even leave its sheath (similar to Iaijutsu, a style of sword techniques). It creates a distortion in space that engulfs his target which is sliced multiple times by the blade in very rapid succession. This ability is capable of hitting any enemies that are within the rather large distortion radius. This ability could also strike opponents from a distance and a simple swing of the blade was capable of even cutting through objects and individuals several yards away. The Yamato's power is so immense that even angels are wary of it to where Immanuel, upon first meeting Vergil, caught the blade with his fingers and admitted later on to Vergil that should he have attempted to catch it in his palm he could have more than likely been able to pierce through him.
The Yamato also appears to have a symbiotic connection with its wielder almost as if it houses its own essence where it recognizes a wielder that is either of Sparda's blood or has a connection to Vergil himself. This is evident in where Nero could utilize the power of Yamato more properly but was still vastly inferior in comparison to his father. But regardless, he could do it somewhat more efficiently than even Dante despite the fact that Dante's skills with the Yamato have a larger range in their targets. The symbiosis between Yamato and its wielder is made more clearly when the blade actually jettisoned itself from Nero's Devil Bringer and encompassed itself with its own power to be able to apport into Hell upon sensing that Vergil was still alive in the Inferno.
