Tharapita, also known as Tarapitha, Taara, Teeru, or Tooru, was the Estonian god of thunder and war.

Description

Tharapita was also considered the highest god of the local pantheon and the patron god of the sons of Kaleva that lived in Pre-Christian Estonia.

Overview

Despite being the most high in his territory, he was a vassal under Ukko, the Finnish high-god, who was also worshipped in Ancient Estonia. The reason for this arrangement was the fact that the gods of Finns, Karelians, Tavastian, Estonians and Sámi were all related to each other, being of the tribe of the jumala, and thus were often allied against the gods of other cultures, such as the Baltics, Norse and eventually the Christians.
