Tannin
Tannin, also known as Tunnanu, is a sea monster from Canaanite and Hebrew mythology, and is often believed to be a spawn of the Leviathan.
Overview[]
Tannin was a spawn of the mighty Leviathan and thus was considered a "prince of the abyss" ruling in its parent's stead; some claim its second parent to be the Mesopotamian primordial goddess Tiamat or the Greek primordial goddess Ceto, or it was actually created by God when He tore one of the Leviathan's scales off and from that scale grew Tannin.
Due to the latter account of its origins, it is listed among the "great whales" that were created by God on the fifth day of the Genesis creation narrative. According to obscure biblical sources, Tannin ruled the upper darkness of the chaotic oceans whilst Leviathan ruled the lower darkness. Tannin also appears to exert some form of control over the Cetus, species of sea monsters that roam the uncharted depths of the Earth's oceans, which could also hint towards its heritage being traced to Ceto.
