Suriel. (Art by Peter Mohrbacher)
Suriel, also known as Sahariel, Saraqael, Sariel, Säraquyael or Säräqael, is a fallen angel that was a member of the Grigori.
Overview[]
He was one of the leaders of angels who lusted after the daughters of men and produced the Nephilim. They descended to the summit of Mount Hermon, in the days of Jared, to acquire wives and lead men astray.
Sariel rarely stays with the other fallen angels instead staying by the moon and eternally watching the life of Earth. This is why he is called the Angel of the Waning Moon or the Lone Seeker
History[]
War in Heaven[]
When the war started, the Angels that were uninvolved stayed clear of the wave of death that spread across the Earth. To risk one’s immortality on fighting seemed chance not worth taking. Sariel perched above it all, waiting for the wave of bloodshed to roll back. In doing so, his power receded as well. He waited patiently and watched himself waste away. He waited for his time to come, to venture out and regain his freedom amongst the stars.
Book of Enoch[]
Knibbs' translation of the names of the Book of Enoch says it was Suriel who taught humans the "course of the moon" (the Lunar Calendar). His name is also listed as Arazyal and Asaradel in some 1 Enoch translations, the name being a combination of sa'ar and 'God.' The Lesser Key of Solomon lists the demon dukes Asteliel and Gediel as commanding Suriel by night.
