Randolph Carter (Art by MalakiaLaGatta)

Randolph Carter was an antiquarian author and one-time student of Miskatonic University. He was born around 1874, though due to his reclusive demeanour, many details are unknown. He is possessed of a gift of prophecy.

Overview[]

Randolph is a withdrawn, reclusive, melancholy man who has been known to faint in times of great emotional stress. He was the descendant of Sir Randolph Carter, who had studied magic during the reign of Queen Elizabeth I of England. Sir Randolph had then emigrated to America and his son Edmund Carter later had to flee the Salem Witch Trials. Carter also had an ancestor involved in one of the Crusades, who was purportedly captured by the Muslims and learned of so-called "wild secrets" from them.

History[]

Background[]

When Randolph Carter was nine years old, he visited his uncle’s farm. Following a peculiar incident, the details of which are largely unknown, he gained a gift of prophecy, that being the ability to enter a dreamworld filled with strange entities. Following the outbreak of the First World War, Carter served in the French Foreign Legion, and was badly wounded in fighting near Belloy-en-Santerre in 1916 during the Battle of the Somme.

British Paranormal Society[]

Following the war, Carter and his friend Harley Warren investigated a cemetery that Warren believed could prove some theories of his concerning the nature of death. Warren was killed by an unknown entity. Carter was later questioned by the police, and his testimony would later find its way into the hands of the British Paranormal Society. He would be approached by them and questioned further, eventually being offered a position among them.

Disappearance[]

After working with them for almost a decade, he decided to go back to his somewhat quiet life, content to adventure in his dreams. He would later search for the lost city of his dreamworld. He awoke after having found it, with only a faint recollection of the journey.

As he grew older, he began to lose his grip on his abilities, prompting him to travel through space and time through the power of a silver key found at his childhood residence. He remained in the past, in the form of his childhood self, before eventually transcending his form and inhabiting an alien body after being convinced to do so by Yog-Sothoth (in the form of an approximation of Carter). He vanished, intermittently popping up throughout space and time for reasons known only to him and his research.
