Putto

A Putto (putti in plural), also known as a Cherub or Cupid, is an angelic figure depicted as a chubby male child, usually naked and sometimes winged, equated with love and passion.

Appearance[]

Putto are depicted as chubby winged children or infants, however, unlike the archetypal depiction of cherubs they are portrayed as having an ethereal appearance with a crimson red coloration. Most of the time they do not even have a full body but instead appear as the heads of infants with two or six wings around them. Like any angel, they can manifest multiple eyes as well but still retain their infantile appearance. Their red coloration symbolizes their equation to love and passion.

Description[]

Putti are angels equated with love and passion, and are also the Heavenly spirits of either unborn children or infants that passed away at birth. Putti are said to be lesser versions of the Cherubim and are the lowest in Heaven's hierarchy. Though often mistaken for Cherubim, they are different from one another, as among the tasks of the Cherubim is to watch over and care for the Putti akin to daycare workers.

The putti are said to work under Chamuel, the archangel of love and relationships, although it is revealed that they may also work under deities associated with love such as Cupid, Eros, or Hedone but that in of itself is a rarity. For a putti to work for these deities the latter must request permission from Chamuel and the offices of Heaven. They must also never be used for vindictive reasons as Aphrodite quickly retracted her statement for wanting to use one of the Putto to instill jealousy and hatred in a woman for she would be punished accordingly by Chamuel

Putti are winged, allegedly because lovers are flighty and likely to change their minds, and boyish because love is irrational. Their symbols are the arrow and torch, "because love wounds and inflames the heart." Similarly to the Roman god Cupid, Putti carry two kinds of arrows, or darts, one with a sharp golden point, and the other with a black tip of lead. A person wounded by the golden arrow is filled with passionate love, but the one struck by the black arrow feels aversion and desires only to flee. According to one putti the black arrow is only shot at those that are being seduced by mortals of impure heart and twisted love.
