~ Penemue |
Penemue, known as the Fallen Scribe or Angel of the Written Word, was said to be a Scribe of God, and one of the fallen Watchers to become a member of the Grigori. He descended to Earth and revealed to the humans every secret of their wisdom. He is often compared to the Greek Titan Prometheus.
Description[]
He is described as a tall, thin man that stands twice the height of a human, with graceful, feathered wings sprouting from his back. At his side is a long-sword, but he seems much more interested in the book he is reading.
He is a curer of stupidity in man, mentioned in Bereshith Rabba. As an Angel associated with Abraxiel (Abraxas), Penemue was also likely of the order of healing angels called the Labbim. He taught men to understand writing, and the use of ink and paper. Therefore numerous have been those who have gone astray from every period of the world, even to this day. Due to human curing stupidity of man, they have, unfortunately, now been addicted to the method of writing and the use of ink.
History[]
Fall from Grace[]
Penemue was among the many Watchers who conjoined in the seduction and mating with mortal women under Naamah's spell. Against the will of the Almighty, he taught mortal life the arts of the pen. He, and the others who rebelled, were cast out. Penemue, lacking other options, joined his fallen brethren, knowing he could not match his skill with a sword against the likes of Michael, and was thus opted to become the chronicler of the Fallen Watchers. Brave (some say foolish) mortals still call on him to learn the secret arts of language, for Penemue is still the undisputed master of words.
For with the wisdom that was brought forth to them, they desired to learn more and would write it down constantly on paper. It is said that not even death, which destroys everything, have affected them. With the knowledge they acquired, it is when they perish, and by this also its power consumes them. It is said that Penemue taught man to lie long before sins completely overtook the Earth.
Chronicler of Sheol[]
Sheol, however, had no such hierarchy. Though unlike Hell, they could not make a kingdom of Sheol for it was far too barren and desolate, the furthest from God's light. Even Hell, for all its malice and wickedness, was not exempt from God's sight. Despite their predicament in terms of being chained within Sheol, they had some semblance of freedom to roam. Of them, perhaps the strangest tale is that of Penemue. Originally one of the archivists of the higher spheres, the Scribe had no real cause to rebel against his masters. At least, that is what most believe. The truth is, of course, much more complicated.
Penemue, by most accounts, was dedicated to his domain of words and writing. Indeed his writing could be found etched upon towers not made by mortal hand and walls upon cliffs not made of earthly stone. His existence was marked only by his friendship with Ramiel. When Gadreel was in despair, he was approached by Ramiel who then brought him to Penemue, in the hope that the Scribe could find the words to assuage Gadreel's despair. To everyone’s surprise, Penemue could not find them. Instead, he suggested that the Silent Sentinel think on the issues, and then write on them in order to help others with the same doubts. The rest, as they say, is history.
