Athena then clothed her followed with Persuasion and the Charites adorning her with necklaces and other finery. The Horae adorned her with a garland crown. Finally, Hermes gives this woman a name: Pandora – "All-gifted" – "because all the Dodekatheon gave her a gift. Zeus ordered Hephaestus to mold her out of earth as part of the punishment of humanity for Prometheus' theft of the secret of fire, and all the gods joined in offering her "seductive gifts".
Overview[]
Pandora was created by the gods to act as the warden for all the evils that sprung forth during the Battle of the Powers; the long brutal struggle between the gods and the Ogdru Hem. She would watch over and carry the box, but was not told of its contents of which consists of "burdensome toil and sickness that brings death to men", and "a myriad other pains". Pandora remained as the box's keeper up until the end of the Silver Age, these evils were said to have whispered sweet temptations into her ears, playing unto her inquisitive nature and churning the well of frustration she feels at wanting to know what was inside the box. She finally gave into her impulses and curiosity, promptly cracking open the box's lid to peek at what was inside, but this disastrous moment only served to release the evils back unto the world.
The opening of the jar served as the end of the Silver Age and the beginning of the Bronze Age, in which man is now subject to the myriad of evils that plagued the Earth in the aftermath of the war between the gods and the Ogdru Hem. They would now indulge in all the vices and fall prey to diseases and pains, plunging the world back into darkness. However, despite the evils reigning over the spirits and minds of man, the last bastion remained inside the box; Hope. Hope was said to have been used by Norea to aid in Noah's building of the ark as a means to ensure humanity's survival after the Great Flood wipes out all the evils off the face of the Earth.
