A supposed map of where Mu is located

Mu was an ancient lost continent that now lies at the bottom of the Pacific Ocean. In ancient times, the continent was populated by a civilization known as the Muvians, who worshipped Ghatanothoa, who was trapped under the mountain of Yaddith-Gho.

History[]

Origins[]

The continent of Mu was one of the many great continents that survived the Battle of the Powers; a cataclysmic battle between the Elohim and the Ogdru Hem. After the introduction of Adam and Eve along with their Edenian relatives, their children and descendants split into various tribes but converged as one kingdom through Hyperborea, but beforehand they would drive off the early primal hominids that were created by the Elder Things with some of these hominids migrating to the land of Mu, away from the Hyperborean people.

However, the hominids that resided upon Mu were the ones that still owed their allegiance to the Ogdru Hem and as time went by they began to take more human shape as their Edenian cousins. Despite their advancement, they could not overcome the might of Hyperborea and thus believed the Ogdru Hem would bring forth great judgment against them. As a result, they offered human sacrifices to appease them. These sacrifices consisted of twelve young warriors and twelve young maidens. In turn for this sacrifice, the people of Mu hoped that the Ogdru Hem would grant them power to overcome the "usurpers" of a planet they believe is theirs by right.

Destruction[]

The Old One which resided in Mu was none other than Ghatanothoa himself, the 'son' of the great Cthulhu, and through him they would give their worship and devotion to the Old One. Ghatanothoa's priesthood consisted of one hundred members, who held much political sway in the culture, living in large palaces, possessing wealth, slaves and concubines, as well as being immune to all rules due to their importance in appeasing the old god. Other deities were also worshipped in Mu, but in much smaller cult capacities. Notable ones include Yig as well as Nug and Yeb.

However, due to blasphemous teachings and rituals committed by the people of Mu, at least those who did not diverge from Ghatanothoa and Ythogtha's worship, the gods exact their terrible wrath. According to legend, Kanaloa dragged the entire continent into the ocean whilst Poseidon buried Ythogtha deep below it to never again see the light of day, eventually sealing any underwater caves leading to the sunken continent with the emergent landmass of Atlantis. It is believed by some that when the continent sank, a survivor of the disaster, Queen Mu, went on to found the Ancient Egyptian civilization, while others fled to Central America and became the Mayan people.

Lost Tablets of Mu[]

Churchward claimed that "more than fifty years ago", while he was a soldier in India, he befriended a high-ranking temple priest who showed him a set of ancient "sunburnt" clay tablets, supposedly in a long-lost "Naga-Maya language" which only two other people in India could read. Churchward convinced the priest to teach him the dead language and decipher the tablets by promising to restore and store the tablets, for Churchward was an expert in preserving ancient artifacts. The tablets were written in either Burma or in the lost continent of Mu itself, according to the high priest.

Having mastered the language himself, Churchward found out that they originated from "the place where [man] first appeared—Mu". The 1931 edition states that "all matter of science in this work are based on translations of two sets of ancient tablets": the clay tablets he read in India, and a collection of 2,500 stone tablets that had been uncovered by William Niven in Mexico.

The tablets begin with the creation of Earth, Mu, and the superior human civilization Naacal by the seven commands of the seven superlative intellects of the seven-headed serpent Narayana. This creation story dismisses the theory of evolution. Churchward gave a vivid description of Mu as the home of an advanced civilization, the Naacal, which flourished between 50,000 and 12,000 years ago, was dominated by a “white race", and was "superior in many respects to our own". At the time of its demise, about 12,000 years ago, Mu had 64 million inhabitants and seven major cities, and colonies on the other continents. The 64 million inhabitants were separated as ten tribes that followed one government and one religion.
