Lotan
Lotan, also known as Litan, or Litanu, was a seven-headed sea dragon from Canaanite mythology. Not only was he a servant of Yam, the god of the sea, but also a child of the Leviathan and Tiamat.
Overview[]
Lotan was one of the earliest monstrous spawn of the Leviathan when it mated with Tiamat. After Leviathan's imprisonment and Tiamat's supposed destruction, Lotan was free to terrorize the primordial oceans. Though untameable at first, that was no longer the case when he was confronted by sea god Yam and bound the beast into his service.
Within the epic cycle from the city of Ugarit, he was sent by Yam to battle Baal-Hadad, the storm god. Despite being a fierce monster, Lotan was eventually slain by the storm god (possibly with the help of his sister-wife Anat), who would eventually rise to become one of the chieftain gods of the Divine Council.
