Longinus Penitent One

Longinus (Art by Mohamed Saad)

Longinus, also known as the Penitent One, was a blind Roman centurion who pierced the side of Jesus with a lance. After his role in the death of Jesus, Longinus was condemned to forever roam the Earth and be beholden to the sins of man that wreak havoc across human world as penance for his action.

Appearance[]

Longinus in the beginning wore the typical garb of a Roman centurion coupled with the red fanned helmets, silver chestguard adorned with gold links, a red tunic, and silver shoulder plates. After his return from his punishment, he now wears a silver plated armor and his design is based on traditional Catholic precepts, such as the red cord or cincture he wears around his waist and his distinct capirote-like pointed helmet.

Overview[]

Longinus was a Roman centurion present at the Crucifixion of Jesus Christ where he was said to have pierced the side of Christ with his lance, effectively creating the legendary Lance of Longinus. It is said that when the blood of Christ splashed unto his face it healed him of his ailment which in his case was blindness. This event has made him realize that Jesus was indeed the Son of God but the deed was done. Jesus' death rocked the foundations of the holy lands where sin and malice would now wreak havoc across the world of man.

Longinus' punishment involved having to witness the atrocities committed by man and the blood of Christ also prevented him from dying. Longinus would later be condemned to a cave by God where every night the Piraeus Lion came and mauled him until dawn, after which his body healed back to normal, in a pattern that would repeat until the end of time. Despite his predicament, an order known as the Brotherhood of St. Longinus was made in his name to right the wrongs committed by Longinus in the hopes of bringing the centurion reprieve from his predicament. However, they were excommunicated from the Church when their mission came to oppose His Holiness Escribar.

It was not until some centuries later that Longinus would be called forth by Anunciada to finally pursue and redeem himself of his penance by ridding the land of Cvstodia from its extreme religious zeal and fervor which plagued all lands throughout under the control of the Hallowed One known as Abraxas. Armed with the Mea Culpa, a sword forged with the "blood of Christ and tempered with the tears of Heaven", Longinus embarked on a quest to save the people of Cvstodia from the clutches of its Church, the holy monstrosities of the "Miracle", and the will of Abraxas itself while also seeking redemption.
