Leanan Sídhe (Art by Arnaer)

The Leanan Sídhe, also known as the Fairy Lover, is a malevolent fairy in Celtic and Irish mythology. Leanan is portrayed as an exceptionally beautiful female who lives near tombs and cemeteries, and is always searching for male human lovers, especially widowers who visit the graves of their deceased wives.

According to legend, when a man becomes the lover of a Leanan his lifespan shortens but is filled with pleasures and joys. An example of this is one particular legend depicts a struggling artist who had no inspiration to create his songs. But it was not until a Leanan appeared before him and in exchange for his love gave him the inspiration he needed to continue his work. The artist accepted his proposal and spent his days totally in love with the Leanan, composing the most beautiful songs ever written and gathering large amounts of wealth in the process. However, as days passed, madness took over his mind and he died alone, wandering among the hills of Ireland.
