Kek (Art by Sintoj)

Kek, also known as Kauket in female form, was the primordial deity of night and day respectively.

Overview[]

Kek is one of the Ogdoad which consisted of four pairs of deities, four male gods paired with their female counterparts. Kek's female counterpart was Kauket. Kek and Kauket in some aspects also represent night and day, and were called "raiser up of the light" and the "raiser up of the night", respectively. The sound of Kek's croak is said to be able to compel his opponents to submit to his will

History[]

Origins[]

Kek was one of the Ogdoad of Khmunu, comprised of four frog gods and four snake goddesses of chaos. These deities were Nun and Naunet (water), Amun and Amaunet (invisibility), Heh and Hauhet (infinity) and Kek and Kauket (darkness). The chaos existed without the light, and thus Kek and Kauket came to represent this darkness. They also symbolized obscurity, the kind of obscurity that went with darkness, and night.

Given that Kek was a personification of a perfect equinox, he was something of a neutral deity even among his fellow pantheon when they would quarrel over trivial matters. What he did firmly stand upon was balance and thus was a close associate of Maat. Kek became one of the divine patrons for the Amenti, specifically the Ka-Kekui who were Amenti devoted to Kek and his female counterpart. Through Kek, the Ka-Kekui harnessed the power of the equinox, wielding light and dark, to protect the kingdom of Egypt alongside their fellow Amenti.
