Janai'ngo (Art by Xu Tianhua)
Janai'ngo, also known as the Lobster of the Deep or the Thanapod, is one of the Old Ones.
Description[]
Janai'ngo is depicted as a crustacean-like, tentacled, half-amorphous marine horror. Several holes can be seen opening and retracting to the side of its head, presumably for respiration. In place of mandibles is a vertical line of sharp teeth. It also has tentacles on its claws which it can use to grab people or control corpses like puppets.
Overview[]
Janai'ngo dwells within the depths of the Bay of Rhiiklu, somewhere within the eastern coast of the United States. According to the Atlanteans, Janai'ngo accompanied Dagon and the Ogdru Hem during their travels through the stars and made their way towards the Earth to claim it as their own. Janai'ngo also aided in the construction of the lost city of R'lyeh to serve as Cthulhu's dwelling and place of power.
It is also a monstrous scourge upon the Merfolk, who serve as nothing but a source of sustenance to where any Merfolk unfortunate enough to swim or encroach upon its territory is swiftly devoured by the beast; this earned it the title of "Mermaid Killer" by the Merfolk themselves. As a result, many of the merpeople avoid the Bay of Rhiiklu but were forced to take action against the beast as it began to spawn numerous offspring which would certainly spell doom for not just the Merfolk but also surface dwellers.
Janai'ngo's legend would also not go unnoticed by those on land as sailors and pirates all speak of what they refer to as the Great Crab who leaves corpses of Mermaids strewn across the sea bed near its dwelling and also sinks ships that sail near its domain. It certainly gained traction when a group of sailors went missing around the eastern coast of the United States which according to Lawrence Jefferson, a Victorian thief, were chasing a girl thought to be a witch only to discover she was a mermaid and all wound up within the jaws of Janai'ngo.
