“ | You misunderstand me, Dante. I'm not what you think. I was praying for you to save the town. These people...they're all my Father's creations. His masterpiece. I'm not...a hammer, as you say. I have questions, I have doubts. I don't know what is right or what is wrong anymore, whether you passed or failed here. But in the coming months, you will have more decisions to make. ~ Immanuel |
Immanuel, more commonly known as Manny, is a powerful angel who was responsible for saving Vergil from Hell, on Heaven's command. He was tasked with aiding the sons of Sparda and their allies in preventing the Illuminati from resurrecting Lucifer. However, upon discovering the betrayal of several angels whom were aligned with Lucifer, Immanuel defied Heaven out of mistrust and joined the sons of Sparda.
Overview[]
Immanuel's presence was noted when he was discreetly aiding Vergil in his escape from Hell alongside his partner Saint Lucia, guiding the eldest son of Sparda down a path that would lead him to freedom from the Inferno. After several confrontations with supernatural phenomena that were drawn to Vergil's escape, Immanuel finally revealed himself to the Devil May Cry agency, explaining his origins and mission; which is to watch over the brothers though Dante was initially skeptical, especially Vergil.
Despite being tasked to watch over the brothers, Immanuel did not intervene in certain events, and the reason was later revealed if it was not related to the oncoming Apocalypse. All in all, Immanuel was something of an enigma until he slowly proved his worth by helping the Devil May Cry agency with missions that have ties to Lucifer's release. It was not until the midst of the Illuminati arc that Immanuel appeared before the gathered power players that he revealed his purpose here on Earth: to stop the Illuminati from resurrecting Lucifer from his tomb. Though he was difficult to work with due to his nature as an angel, Immanuel became an invaluable ally to the protagonists and developed a close friendship with Dante and his partners.
Appearance[]
As a human, Immanuel appears handsome man of average height in his thirties. He sports a pair of dress shoes, dark jeans, a grey sweater accentuated by a black leather jacket. His hair a dark brown color and combed forwards. Perhaps his most defining feature are his eyes which depicted as being a vibrant blue that pertain to his true nature as an angel. Although he has a very dire demeanor, his outward appearance radiates a natural calm and serenity which makes conversation easy and direct.
As an angel, however, experiencing Immanuel's true form will result in blindness, deafness, or even death, as the appearance of his natural visage is so overwhelming that it is capable of burning human, demon, or monster eyes from their sockets. However, Immanuel stated certain, "special people" are able to tolerate his true appearance and voice.
Immanuel's true form is revealed to be that of a colossal celestial being with three sets of massive wings, the first pair having rows of glowing eyes, a tall thin body, the hind legs of a lion, the arms thin and with four long fingers, and three heads: One humanoid and in the shape of a white mask with painted tears streaming down the sockets, one of a zebra, and the other of a ram.
Personality[]
Immanuel is a strong, determined, impulsive, ignorant and naive celestial being. Like most angels, Immanuel expresses little to no emotion, which creates flaws and complexities in his persona. Despite this, he does not display the blank apathy or mocking superiority that seem to characterize angels such as Lucifer. His lack of emotion and understanding of human behavior such as sarcasm has led to several humorous situations. His vocabulary and endearments were also outdated and out of place in modern times, he was trapped inside, mystifying everyone around him into thinking he was delusional even though it was simply the way his kind spoke.
Immanuel frequently struggles to understand human behavior; due to being a celestial; as such he tends to come off as awkward or uncomfortable to others, such as when he casually ported in a room and interrupted a talk between Dante and Sara instead of using a door. Despite his difficulty of expressing emotion and understanding things, Immanuel is a very kind celestial being. He deeply cares for humans, and is one of the vast majority of angels that has faith in God, despite having not personally seen Him. While he does have faith in God, he admits he may not always understand what God wants and may question His reasoning. But in the end he always follows his father to the best of his abilities. This, along with his interest and love for humans, has caused other arrogant and superior angels to label him as weak or naive, but also peculiar.
Immanuel is quick to making friends and gaining their trust, something which takes much time for other angels to do. While he is labeled as 'weak', he is far from it. Immanuel, however, did still appear to be somewhat hot-tempered, as when he battled Dante in the woods for the first time after he subdued the Shepherd for questioning. However, he quickly came to see that he and the other members of the Dark Knight Initiative were fighting for the same cause and befriended them. Immanuel's loyalty to someone becomes so strong he becomes very protective and will fight a threat that may kill his friend with great indignation and ferocity. He was also capable of great mercy, outright stating he did not wish to kill Lucifer and while he is against the Morningstar's plans in rewriting reality to remove God's hold over all life, he acknowledged that Lucifer was hurt and in pain from Heaven's treatment towards him as well as God's abandonment.
