Hyperborea

Hyperborea is a lost continent that was once located in the north pole, that was divided into four countries by four major rivers.

Description[]

At the center of the continent was a whirlpool into which the four rivers which divide the north emptied themselves into these. In this whirlpool, water rushed around turbulently before descending into the Subterranean Ocean of the Hollow Earth, just as if one were pouring it through a filter funnel.

Along with Thule, Hyperborea was one of several terrae incognitae to the Greeks and Romans, where Pliny, Pindar and Herodotus, as well as Virgil and Cicero, reported that people lived to the age of one thousand and enjoyed lives of complete happiness. Hecataeus of Abdera collated all the stories about the Hyperboreans current in the fourth century BC and published a lengthy treatise on them, lost to us, but noted by Diodorus Siculus. Also, the sun was supposed to rise and set only once a year in Hyperborea, which would place it above or upon the Arctic Circle, or, more generally, in the arctic polar regions which is also said to have a sky being curtained with "godly rays" which are actually the Northern Lights.

Overview[]

Hyperborea was ruled by the legendary Hyperboreans, a people who lived in the northernmost part of the known world and purported to be the first race of men which directly descended from Adam and Eve. Despite their location in an otherwise frigid part of the world, the Hyperboreans were believed to inhabit a sunny, temperate, and divinely-blessed land. In many versions of the story, they lived north of the Riphean Mountains, which shielded them from the effects of the cold North Wind.

Hyperborea, unfortunately, met its end with the arrival of Cain which led to the worship of Yhoundeh, the Elk-Goddess. Cain's presence within Hyperborea began to warp the nature of the people. The Hyperboreans began divulge into sin and unleashing mayhem unto their kingdom, tarnishing the gift that was so graciously given to them by Rahab. But what truly sealed the fate of the Hyperboreans was their worship of Yhoundeh. In a fit of rage and desperation to protect the Hyperboreans, and also going against the orders of Heaven, Rahab tore into the continent, flooding massive sections of the land and even tore a chunk of the continent off in sheer anger, sensing the taint of the Adversary and even worse, an Old One, and would not allow it to fall under their hands and be seduced by the serpent's forked tongue or the taint of an Old One. This torn piece of Hyperborea drifted off into the sea and was said to have become the lost kingdom of Atlantis.

Despite Hyperborea being a shadow of its former glory, it still somewhat thrived through Atlantis, which was claimed by Poseidon, and the surviving piece of land was claimed by Apollo who promptly banned the worship of Tsathoggua, and drove away the Great Old One. The Hyperboreans who fled to the waters with Atlantis would evolve to become Merfolk due to their unique physiology. Over the centuries, the oldest myths portray them as the favorites of Apollo, and some ancient Greek writers regarded the Hyperboreans as the mythical founders of Apollo's shrines at Delos and Delphi. Heracles himself was said to have visited Hyperborea but this mainly due to him chasing the Ceryneian Hind as one of his Twelve Labors.
