The House Beneath the Hill with Cernunnos in the entrance.

The House Beneath the Hill is the abode of Cernunnos, the Celtic god of the wild. In the case of his Underworld aspect where he is called The Dark Man, Cernunnos resides in a 'house' that resembles a massive tree.

Description[]

The branches of the tree itself seemed to interlace and connect with many other branches from other trees. This could indicate that the function of the House behaves similarly to Yggdrasil, the World Tree of Norse mythology, as the House serves as a doorway to another part of the Underworld with the other connected trees serving as their own separate doorways to other parts of the Underworld. It is from the entrance of the House that John meets the spectral form of Cernunnos.

Overview[]

The House Beneath the Hill is not exactly a 'house' but more akin to a simple abode where the Horned God resides during his reign as a chthonic deity deep in the enchanted forest of Brocéliande.

The House acts as its own area within the Celtic underworld while also serving as a sort of prison for the diabolical souls that Cernunnos chases and captures during the great Wild Hunt. This function is also present when a set of souls are given to Cernunnos from outside sources. One example is Morgan Le Fay who traps many unfaithful knights in her Vale of No Return within Brocéliande for Cernunnos to take inside the House.

When John Constantine requested the aid of a Druid to help him reach the Otherworld within Brocéliande, he was met with large and leafless tree with a seemingly hollow trunk. Before him was a small crack that was big enough for a human to enter and understood that this was not only the entrance to the Otherworld but also to the House Beneath the Hill.
