Nobody's got time for all that "destiny" crap. Destiny's overrated. The only thing I'm interested in is doin' the job. Goin' out there, savin' the humans, pounding the teeth in of a bunch of monsters, and maybe taking in some cats along the way.
~ Hellboy

Hellboy (birth name Anung Un Rama) is a Cambion working for the Bureau for Paranormal Research and Defense.

Overview[]

He was the son of the demon Azazel and a human witch, who was born in Hell. Although a bit gruff, he shows none of the malevolence thought to be intrinsic to classical demons and has an ironic sense of humor.

Hellboy works for the B.P.R.D., an international non-governmental agency, and for himself against dark forces including Nazis and witches. Due to his profession and reputation, he is often identified as the "World's Greatest Paranormal Investigator" on par with the likes Dante or John Constantine.

Appearance[]

Hellboy is shown to be a large, red-skinned demon with a tail, horns (which he files off, leaving behind circular stumps on his forehead), cloven hooves for feet, and an oversized right hand made of stone (the "Right Hand of Doom"). He has been described as smelling of dry-roasted peanuts. He usually wears a beige trench coat or a short-sleeved black shirt.

When in Devil Trigger, Hellboy's stumps become full-grown horns and bears a flaming crown that floats above his head. He sprouts massive chiropteran wings, the runic markings on his Right Hand of Doom glow brightly which eventually reach over his chest, abdomen, and face in an intricte pattern. His Right Hand of Doom also twists and warps, growing sharp claws and edges, fashioned in a liquid-like pattern. Hellboy can also reach titanic sizes when in his Devil Trigger.

History[]

Background[]

Hellboy is the son of the fallen angel turned demon Azazel and the human witch Sarah Hughes who is revealed to be a descendant of King Arthur thus making Hellboy the rightful heir to Britian.

As an infant he was being taken care of by the demons Astaroth and Mammon, who cut off his right hand, and crafted on the enigmatic Right Hand of Doom, the key to the Outerverse, where the powerful Outer Gods are trapped. The demons likely hoped that with the help of the ancient deity they could defeat God and avoid their fate in the Lake of Fire.

World War II[]

On December 1944 in Scotland, the young cambion was summoned to Earth by Projekt Ragnarok, an occult doomsday-project of the Nazi-think tank Ahnenerbe. The project was led by Grigori Rasputin, a secret follower of Yog-Sothoth who hoped to cause the end of the world and the rise of a "New Eden".

Luckily for mankind the infant appeared in an old church in England and was discovered by agents of Bureau for Paranormal Research and Defense. One of the agents was a devout Catholic, who despite knowing what creature was, decided to adopt him and christened the young Cambion as "Hellboy".

Paranormal Investigator[]

Hellboy was relocated to America, where he was secretly trained by the B.P.R.D. as a field agent and detective. Over the decades he has become one of the organizations top field agents, having faced several of the Ogdru Hem and other supernatural beings, without really knowing his purpose to unleash the Ogdru Jahad back into the universe. Nevertheless, he remains to be instrumental in both the release of the Old Ones as well as their defeat.

Personality[]

Hellboy is often described as a likable, gruff person with much panache and witty humor in his attitude. He is easily angered by the (often defective) gadgets he uses, but has a genuinely good heart and love for other humans, despite his demonic origins. He is also intolerant towards those who, in his own words, "flap their gums" too much such as the werewolf twins Kervyn and Egor or the young demon hunter Nero; this would also result in a battle between the two cambions. While is not exactly a social butterfly, Hellboy is surprisingly good at forming friendships and close bonds although that in of itself takes some effort. Even so, Hellboy would become a father-figure/older brother of sorts to the likes of Nezuko Kamado, Liz Sherman, and Yim Miyeon. He is not above making wisecracks and throwing witty remarks at his opponents.

A living oxymoron, Hellboy is a force for good, with an iron will and a desire to do the right thing. He has continuously stated his disinterest in his supposed ‘purpose,’ and tries to hide his conflicted feelings beneath the wisecracking façade of an adventurous tough-guy who would just as soon knock back a cold beer and light a stogie, than battle demons and evil spirits. He also could care less about the motivations behind an antagonist's mission and states that the only thing that concerns him is stopping said antagonist from unleashing destruction upon humanity.

Hellboy is also incredibly brave, charging headfirst into a battle and facing insurmountable odds while never giving up even if he is knocked to the ground numerous times. Like Dante, he rejects his demonic heritage, to the point where he willingly represses his Devil Trigger in fear of its power overtaking his mind and hurting his allies around him. He also does this in a midst of a battle when he is being overwhelmed as seen during his fight with Nero when the young knight beat him down in his own Devil Trigger state, then briefly knock back Nero with his Devil Trigger implosion only to immediately hold it back. He uses his Devil Trigger sparingly with battles against opponents he knows he cannot normally win against such as the horseman Conquest and the Harlot of Babylon. Such displays of regression shows his attachment to his human side and his disdain towards his demon side, but he has nonetheless come to accept what he is.

Powers and Abilities[]

Being that he is the son of the fallen angel, Azazel, it is no question that Hellboy himself is extremely powerful, capable of even engaging against the Ogdru Hem as well as their ilk. His superhuman abilities stem from his demonic heritage and he appears to wield powers and abilities that he inherited from both of his parents with several others unique as his own. Even though he only ever fights using his physical prowess, Hellboy is nonetheless superior than any normal human.

Hellboy is known for his great strength with Stolas hinting that his strength is quite possibly limitless. He has fought and competed against some of the mightiest opponents who possess strength to shatter large bodies of the environment. His strength appears to be limited due to repressing his more demonic power but when tapping into said power he can overcome many powerful beings. He is also known to be an excellent fighter and swordsman as well, as shown when wielding the legendary Excalibur and was able to push the likes of Nero, who is a renowned Devil Hunter and powerful fighter in his own right, to use his Devil Trigger. Moreover, Excalibur's properties only serves to increase Hellboy's strength, speed, and accuracy when fighting.

Like any Cambion, Hellboy has access to his own Devil Trigger though unlike most half-breeds he does not use it as often. It is said that the power of his Devil Trigger is so great that it would make him lose his sense of self and become a feral beast. His Devil Trigger appears to manifest under emotional duress. Nevertheless, Hellboy could tap into his demonic power briefly in order to overwhelm opponents that are too powerful to handle in the traditional sense such as the horseman Conquest. Even so, before his transformation he held his own against the horseman for a considerable amount of time before assuming his devil state in an attempt to turn the tides.

However, when Hellboy unleashes his true power he becomes a nigh-unstoppable force. His true power was first showcased when he fought against the Harlot of Babylon, who was strong enough to effortlessly overwhelm and injure Seras, Nezuko, and Sara Pezzini who bears the Witchblade, and possess attacks that create tsunamis over a portion of the planet's hemisphere. In his battle against the Harlot, he was initially unable to land a decisive hit but when he accessed his devil state, he not only gained a more titanic form but also nonchalantly parried or blocked all of her attacks while countering with his own, putting her on the defensive and later injuring her severely, eventually forcing her to retreat. Another major feat when assuming his full-demon form, Hellboy was able to effortlessly slaughter Hell's most powerful inhabitants, a feat that made Sargatanas himself compare it to something of Sparda's calibur.
