Helen Vaughan

Helen Vaughan was a shapeshifting eilchras born to a woman named Mary who was impregnated by an eldritch deity identified to be Hastur.

Appearance[]

In her natural appearance, Helen Vaughan is described as a beautiful woman with olive skin and Mediterranean features (she claims that her father was British and her mother was Italian). However, people who have seen her generally agree that, in spite of her beauty, there is something indescribably off about her appearance, although they couldn't pinpoint what it was.

When Helen shapeshifts, she can assume the form of a man, a beast and something "worse than beast". People who spend time with her invariably end up losing their minds and are either driven to suicide or end up dying of fright. It is not known if this is a result of merely witnessing her transformations and/or other monstrous things that she might tell them, show them, or do to them.

Overview[]

Helen is a sadistic and perverse eilchras of a mortal woman and Hastur, the King in Yellow. She owes her existence to a bizarre experiment conducted by 19th century occultist Dr. Raymond, who operated on the brain of a young woman named Mary. The goal of the operation was to allow Mary to see beyond the shadows of the material world, into the realm that is usually unreachable by human senses; Carcosa, the domain of Hastur. The experiment was a success, but Mary was somehow seized and impregnated by Hastur in the process, and was left permanently insane as a result. Nine months later, she gave birth to Helen and died from labor.

Helen's actions would come under investigation by Edward Grey and Sarah Jewell after discovering not only the marriage between Helen and her former husband Herbert, whom she reduced into poverty, but also the complicity of the two in causing the death of another wealthy gentleman. Intrigued, Grey begins to investigate Helen's past and discovers that as a child she spent much of her time in the woods near her home, taking other children on long walks in the twilight and disturbing the parents of the city. One day, a little boy who had stumbled upon her "playing on the grass with a strange naked yellow man" had become hysterical and later, after seeing the Yellow Sign, permanently insane.

Personality[]

Helen is described sadistic, perverse, immoral and vicious. While on the surface she maintains a regal and sophisticated appearance, many individuals including Edward Grey and Sarah Jewell that there was something highly abnormal about her. Despite being half-human, Helen clearly exhibits traits that are more unexplainable than rational. She was seen dancing naked deep into the woods while covering herself in a viscous yellow fluid and according to an eyewitness report looked as though she was reciting a barbaric play.

She is predatory as she is quite fond of toying with her prey, especially when they are defenseless and vulnerable. She takes pleasure and glee in breaking down her "toys" in mind, body, and spirit such as when she drove several young men to suicide. She is also promiscuous as she has engaged in several ritualistic orgies all while the participants would reenact the "barbaric play" once mentioned by the eyewitness.
