Gullveig ("power of gold") also named Heiðr ("witch") is a powerful sorceress in Norse mythology, who is capable of performing incredible feats of seidr.
Overview[]
A völva recalls that Gullveig was speared by the Æsir before being burnt three times in the hall of Hárr (one of Odin's names), and yet was three times reborn. Presumably after her burning, Gullveig became known as Heiðr, a knowledgeable völva who could perform great feats.
Gullveig is said to be the reason behind the outbreak of the war between the Æsir and the Vanir. Some believe that Gullveig is also one of Freyja's incarnations, which is quite probable as Freyja is well known for her power over gold and mastery over seidr.
