The Great Ones are the so-called "lesser lords" of the Dreamlands, but they are not as powerful as the polytheistic gods and some are not even as intelligent as most humans.
Overview[]
While they once lived on peaks across the world they were driven off of lower mountains by the spread of humanity until they had to leave earth entirely, leaving only a mark on Mount Ngranek. The Great Ones now rule from their hidden fortress of Kadath, whose location in time and space is unknown. As well as occasionally returning to white capped Thurai, Lerion and Hatheg-Kla on cloud ships under the cover of a light mist, they abandoned Kadath for a brief period for the "sunset city" that Randolph Carter conjured in his dreams.
Description[]
The Great Ones are supernatural beings with incredible strength and stamina. They are demonic and godly in both appearance and abilities. They have often been described as gods, and play a mysterious yet crucial role in the Dreamlands, a role that even Dream of the Endless does not fully disclose. It is hinted, however, that the Great Ones are like the 'souls' of gods who were reaped by Dream and taken to his realm just as humans become souls when they pass on and cross over to the next life by Death.
