GRU Division "P", otherwise known as GRU Division Psychotronics or GRU-P was a Russian organization tasked with protecting the Soviet Union (and later the Russian Federation) from the paranatural.
Overview[]
Originally known as the ЧД АКН ("ChD AKN", or Fourth Department Abnormal Occurrences Commission), it was established in early 1935 by direct decree of J. V. Stalin, its first task being the investigation of the murder of S. M. Kirov.
During World War II, the Commission expanded into the newly reorganized GRU as Division "P" - Psychotronics, working to counteract anomalous threats from the SS, Ahnenerbe, and the Church of the Red Harvest, and to capture and study anomalous artifacts both at home and abroad for the benefit of the Soviet government. Division "P" has carried on with this role throughout the Cold War, making FBC operations in the countries of the Comintern difficult.
Description[]
Division "P" GRU shares overall aims with its super organization as per order of the Head Committee of GRU nr. 13/1965 - these include discovering, obtaining or neutralizing foreign technological developments that could endanger USSR and broadly, the states of the Socialist International, their citizenry, or its overall political, economic, military and scientific aims. The activity of "P" division GRU is aimed at suppressing hostile abnormal activities, within the states of the Socialist International, documenting abnormal phenomena, and researching means of their use in furthering the overall aims of the organization.
History[]
Background[]
GRU Division "P" was established in early 1935 by Stalin's decree after the Soviet leader became aware of the 'unnatural' artifacts and equipment the Nazis were discovering and implementing to create powerful weapons of mass destruction that would help them in winning the second World War. In addition, and contrary to belief, the Order of the Silver Cross did not operate under the governmental authority of the organization.
GRU-P was first seen in Berlin in 1946 after the Allies had occupied Germany. GRU-P would begin a massive campaign to track down Nazi paranormal artifacts, weapons project and key occult figures. The Director of GRU-P during this period was a demon named Yomyael inhabiting the body of Varvara Rasputin, whose main goal was to seek any buried secrets the Nazis may have kept in Berlin, and to make sure the Soviet Union was ahead of the Allies in paranormal affairs. Under the leadership of "Varvara" the organization was known for its harsh treatment of Nazi prisoners and the fear she instilled on the men serving her.
1946[]
Professor Trevor Bruttenholm, Dr. Howard Eaton and a group of five American soldiers (three of whom were American Vampires) were investigating for records which were left behind by the Nazis when after hitting a series of dead ends. Bruttenholm would travel to the Soviet-control section of Berlin to see if he was able to to convince the Soviets in sharing information. Once in the Soviet occupation zone, Bruttenholm would come in contact with the Order of the Silver Cross. The leader at the time was Nicholas Romanov, the father of Ivan Romanov, who was made aware of the professor's arrival and sent him coded letters in a book under the nose of the KGB in order to seek his aid as he did not trust the Soviet Union's methods.
However, GRU Division "P" were able to decipher one of the coded messages in the books, prompting Varvara to send her troops to aid the Silver Cross and Bruttenholm's team to investigate Project Vampir Sturm and destroy its vampiric test subjects. However, Varvara did this without informing Stalin as she had her own reasons for seeing this through. For much of the Cold War, GRU Division "P" and the Order of the Silver Cross were viewed as rivals and had limited contact. Though both the Directors of the B.P.R.D. and GRU-P had contact each other during the Cold War, neither agency would help one another as they did in Germany.
1956[]
Members of GRU Division "P" overthrew Varvara after becoming tired working in constant fear of her. They brought a medium to a radio station outpost where she recorded a carefully researched incantation done hundreds of miles away from Varvara and then broadcasted it to her, weakening her and allowing Father Malakim to conduct an orthodox prayer that imprisoned the demon in a glass case. Iosif Nichayko became Varvara's successor.
However after 1991, rapid restructuring, coupled with budget cuts and the decommissioning or sale of significant assets, resulted in numerous defections of their personnel (a significant proportion of MC&D operatives in Eastern Europe originated from GRU Division "P" ranks) and the flooding of the European black market with anomalous items formerly in their possession. This resulted in the decommissioning of GRU Division "P".
