Eurynome was a great demon and often regarded as a prince of death. He is a heinous and vulgar demon that feeds on the corpses of mortals like carrion.
Description[]
Eurynome wears a fox skin to cover the sores covering his body, and he has huge teeth. A statue of him exists in the temple of Delphi depicting him having a black complexion, huge wolf-like teeth, and sitting on a vulture skin.
Overview[]
Eurynome is often confused with the Greek goddess or Oceanid with the same name but the relation between the two is relatively unknown. There are two prevailing theories; the first one suggests that the demon came upon the Titaness after she and her husband, Ophion, were cast out of the ruling mountains of Olympus by Cronus and Rhea. The former Titan queen fell into unconsciousness when she collapsed against the river Oceanus. The demon at the time was feeding on the bodies of the earliest mortals who did not have a proper burial since Hades was not born yet. He saw the body of the former Titan queen and to satiate his curiosity and hunger, the demon took a bite of ankle and arm only to be washed away by Oceanus.
The second theory was that the demon completely devoured the body of the Titaness although that was highly unlikely given the massive powergap between the two. Nevertheless, Eurynome took the name of the Titaness as his own. Almost as if to sully her name and image by taking it while feeding on rotting corpses. Eurynome, the demon, was often considered a pest by chthonic deities, much like how vultures encircle a recently deceased animal. But in Hell he was anointed as a great prince and a demon of death. His devouring of these corpses ensures that they are not given passage to Heaven but instead are sent to Hell, thus people would resort to placing holy coins upon the eyes of the dead that drive back the demon.
