Sir Edward Grey (1856-1916) was a paranormal investigator and hunter, who hailed from England.
Overview[]
He traveled across Europe and North America, fighting and dispatching monsters, demons, ghosts and witches, and became known as the "Witchfinder". Initially operating under the command of Queen Victoria he defected from the monarchy after giving thought to Sarah Jewell's words in regards to the uncaring nature of London's police during the Ripper killings.
History[]
Background[]
Edward Grey was an accomplished hunter, praised even by the likes of the legendary Abraham Van Helsing. At some point he also joined forces with Sarah Jewell, a renowned paranormal investigator from America, and was a member of the Silver Lantern Club, an occult society in England alongside Sarah. He was said to have also had a romantic relationship with a medium named Vanessa Ives.
In the late 1890s they rescued two children that were set to be sacrificed on the eve of the new century; these children were Richard Carnby and Emily Hartwood. Grey and Jewell guarded the children and while under the mentorship of the two hunters, both of whom excel in the investigation and paranormal department, they learned the ways of the supernatural and crime solving.
Around February 1916 Grey discovered that a group of occultists had summoned and contained thee Duke of Hell, Amdusias, who hoped to control the demonic monarch. Grey managed to prevent the completion of the occult ritual, sending the demon back to the Inferno, but was dragged by the Duke of Hell into the pit.
Ghost in Hell[]
Grey landed within the river Acheron, where he was dismembered by Amdusias. He was later stitched back together by unknown creatures of Hell, which allowed him to move freely in the Underworld. While he was bound to Hell, he could travel back to Earth as a ghost. Grey discovered that Vanessa Ives was the culprit behind his state of returning as a ghost with the medium further revealing to Grey that the only reason she was able to succeed without upsetting the Nature Order was winning a game of tarot against Death herself. In addition, Vanessa was so consumed with grief from Edward's death that she could not bear to live in such a dark world without him.
Grey promised Vanessa that he would reunite with her when her time came and despite the circumstances he remarks that he could perhaps bargain with Death over a cup of tea. What Grey did not realize until much later after Vanessa Ives's death was that his return as a ghost was also partly due to a vision Vanessa would receive, a vision that showed him aiding who Vanessa described in her testimony "Anung Un Rama" to save the world from an unimaginable doom. Grey return to Earth on certain occasions, but only for a specific amount of time that was decreed by Death, and he would often advise Hellboy and other agents of Bureau for Paranormal Research and Defense.
