The Dreamlands, also known as the Dream Realm or the Dreaming, is the world where people go to dream and the supposed afterlife for Fables.
It is the domain of Morpheus, also known as Dream of the Endless, and under his complete control. Dream can add and remove places in the Dreaming as he pleases. As long as he is in the Dreaming, neither he nor any of his guests can be harmed.
Description[]
The Dreamlands is a metaphysical plane of symbol, belief, and imagination that is ever-changing. The inhabitants of the Dreamlands are called dreams and nightmares, often they are gods, myths, and even ordinary human beings who later became dreams. However, there are numerous races, civilizations and beings existing in the Dreamlands that do not exist in the waking universe, such as the Zoogs, Gugs, Ghasts, Moon Beasts, and others.
The Dreamlands, have evidenced a direct relation between them, accommodates Dream's wishes, and it is what he wants it to be. More telling, however, is that it is also affected by his moods and his condition, as seen when was imprisoned. During his tenure in the glass ball, the Dream Realm was fading and collapsing just as he was. Morpheus can also create portals to the Dreamlands in the waking world; he can cross between worlds at will, and he can create and destroy beings or places within his realm.
Castle of Dreams[]
In the heart of the Dream Realm is Dream's castle, the front gate of which is guarded by a Gryphon, a Wyvern, and a Hippogryph. Within the castle is a Library, overseen by Lucien, in which are collected all of the books and stories that have ever been dreamed, volumes that do not exist in the waking world.
One entity that can be also be found near the castle within the Dreamlands is Hypnos, the Greek personification of sleep. He is said to serve as a guide to humans within the Dreamland and, due to their sleep, owns half of their lives. His children Morpheus ("Shape"), Phobetor ("Fear") and Phantasos ("Imagination, Phantasy") are the gods of the dream. It is claimed that he has many more children residing within the realm of dreams, which are also Oneiroi.
