You already know that Lucifer fell, John. But when he and the boys got to the bottom...someone was already there. They say that he and the Evils have been there since creation began, but honestly, no one knows if he was always there or he just popped out of chaos. But whatever happened back then, a lot of things came to be. Entities, objects, concepts. Him? He's terror. Terror and darkness given form.
~ Ellie speaking of Urizen

Urizen, also called the First of the Evils, or the First of the Fallen, is the one of the First Three Evils, also called the Prime Evils, that came into being long before the creation of all things. Some have even likened Urizen as the first true demon although he is something else entirely and far above a mere demon.

Appearance[]

Urizen has demonstrated the ability to change his visage at will, even mimicking other individuals. He can even alter his appearance to best mimic his foe's innate terrors. According to the succubus Ellie, Urizen is said to be terror given form, and the conflict between God and Azathoth also sparked the creation of emotions with Urizen embodying terror itself, the terror of having to see the unfathomable scale of the battle between two pre-existential entities.

Being something of a concept, Urizen's true appearance is unknown, and his current appearance is the one he adopted after the creation of Hell. Diablo's gender is malleable. When he possesses an individual, the form reflects that individual's fears. When Nix was possessed, the form was more feminine, as per her own fears, combining with Urizen's new form as the Prime Evil than merely the Lord of Terror.

History[]

Genesis[]

Details regarding the origins of Urizen and the other two Evils are largely unclear although Metatron, the Scribe of God, believes that there are two possible notions on Urizen's background; one is that Urizen came into being during the clash between God and Azathoth and the other is that Urizen and the two Evils have simply always been there. What is known by all, however, is that Urizen originated from the Abyss and was its original inhabitant. His mere existence alone was an act of keeping the universe in balance, by ending life entirely.

When it comes to his origins being tied to the battle between God and Azathoth, it is said that during the warring conflict between the two primordials, their various clashes created "sparks", much like how sparks of ember are ignited whenever two attacks collide powerfully with one another like swords and such, and these sparks reached the Abyss which resulted in the creation of Urizen. But Urizen was said to be in a state where he was neither alive nor dead and it was only when the universe came to be that Urizen gained self-clarity and manifested in the Abyss with his two cohorts. When the Universe was fully formed, God moved the Abyss that held the Three Evils below the confines of creation, most likely to prevent the Evils from crossing over. Urizen, before awakening, was believed to have been aware of what was occurring above him and likened the Almighty as a mad man.

Banishment to Tartarus[]

After the War in Heaven, Lucifer and his rebel angels were tossed out of Heaven and crashed into the Abyss. The impact of the fallen upon this entrance to the abyss created a chain reaction which terraformed the wasteland surrounding the Abyss into a blazing Inferno, and awakened ancient evils slumbering deep within the abyssal chasm, with Urizen among them. After Lucifer rallied his fallen brethren and would establish a kingdom here within the newly formed Hell, they were immediately set upon by Urizen and the two Evils. Urizen fought against Lucifer in a battle to claim rulership over Hell with the Morning Star emerging victorious and banished Urizen and the Evils from Hell, far back into the depths of Tartarus. Urizen then bided his time to take back Hell from Lucifer.
