Curtis "Curt" Kilgrave is an enhanced agent of the Unnatural Analysis Unit, or the Nightstalkers. He serves under Abigail Hawkins, and is usually partnered with Derous another agent of the Nightstalkers.
Overview[]
Curtis Kilgrave is a former priest who renounced his ways and affiliation to the church after discovering that even the shadow of evil can corrupt the so-called "temples of God". He is the brother of Daniel Kilgrave, a CIA agent, who lost his life during a mission involving the acquisition of the Heart Stone, one of the Ab Initio Artifacts. However, unbeknownst to both Daniel and Curtis, the Heart Stone that Daniel was charged with retrieving had adverse effects on his soul, specifically, it prevented him from moving on to the next life and bound him to the artifact. Before Curtis came to take his brother's belongings, Daniel's spirit was expelled by the Heart Stone and latched onto that which Daniel held most dear; a locket belonging to his wife.
When Curtis took the locket, Daniel's spirit attached itself on Curtis, the ectoplasmic matter of Daniel's spirit melding with Curtis. In the process, Daniel was connected to Curtis in mind, body, and soul, as he could hear and see Daniel speaking to him while no one else can aside from several supernatural individuals whose perceptions are so vast they can see ghosts. Not only is Curtis melded with Daniel's ghost, but he can also access the natural abilities of a ghost as well. He was taken in by the Nightstalkers, which at the time was led by Sebastian Hawkins the father of Abigail Hawkins, after witnessing his strange abilities and discreetly aiding them in one of their cases involving the paranormal. In which case, Daniel's ghost could materialize the scenario of which a crime scene happened but not in its full entirety to aid the Nightstalkers in finding clues. Curtis and Daniel joined as full-time agents of the Nightstalkers, assigned as criminal profilers and determining the cause of death.
Appearance[]
Curtis Kilgrave appears as a middle-aged man with light brown unkempt hair and dark blue eyes. Typical of any agent within the Nightstalkers, his attire consists of a coat, a white shirt underneath, with a black tie and a badge on the right side of his chest. He wears black pants with black shoes. Due to his character and demeanor, his style is usually unkempt, often not bothering to button the lapels of his shirt, barely brushing his hair, and has five o'clock shadow.
When in combat, the ectoplasm of which his deceased brother Daniel is comprised of erupts from his eyes and mouth and coats his entire body in a black and white substance. However, the coating of the body is only used when facing against a powerful threat, and usually the ectoplasm only covers his arms, or abdominal area reaching his back when used for more standard combat. When his whole body is coated, he has a noticeable black spiral pattern on his chest that spreads out in vein-like trails around the rest of his body, and his head being black with glowing white eyes shaped like small orbs. The black coloration of the ectoplasm only covers the upper portion of his head reaching all the way to the bottom of his nose leaving the area where his mouth is a white color.
Personality[]
Curtis Kilgrave can best be described as cynical, pessimistic, and sarcastic. In the beginning he was an avid believer of God only to constantly be subjected to horrific acts throughout his years and believe that no matter the effort one puts into praying no one will descend from the skies to help the poor and the suffering. Such experiences left a great impact on him, leading him to drinking and smoking repeatedly to where many bars around New York are familiar with them. Curtis also has a troubled relationship with his brother Daniel. In the beginning the two were as close as brothers can be but after Daniel left to join the CIA, especially when he was unable to attend their mother's funeral, Curtis grew bitter towards Daniel. In contrast to his brother, however, Daniel is more understanding, reasonable, and compassionate. His time in the CIA subjected to all sorts of horror around the world during his career but absorbed the trauma to strengthen himself as he knows that faith will not rid the world of monsters and he must put faith in his own abilities. A sentiment that was then shared with Curtis.
As an agent of the Nightstalkers, initially Curtis lacked the speciality and prowess to be an agent but with the help of his brother who is former CIA, he grew to be an exceptionally skilled criminal profiler. Moreover, as time progressed, Curtis's deductions and skills advanced, becoming one of the top agents of the Nightstalkers. Despite his outlook on life, he is dedicated to his work and will get the job done. His experiences in his past life have made him often belligerent and judging of others and is very prone to standing up to people and telling them like it is. He at times can be brutal in his honesty much like John Constantine though he is aware of when to be humble and not cross a certain line. He can be slightly complicated to befriend though he is not one to turn down a partnership with another agent or ally to the Nightstalkers. He has grown to befriend the likes of Derous and became quite close with Abigail Hawkins and Lucas Woods often acting as an older brother of sorts to the former. It is shown that whenever Abigail and Lucas confide in Curtis, it is mainly to hear the full and brutally honest truth from him in order to steel their resolve and get them back on their feet.
Curtis is often shown arguing with his brother Daniel over how to approach a situation with vast contrasts between the two. Example is when faced with an opponent Curtis opts to destroy them completely but Daniel goes against this as they need them alive in order to interrogate for valuable information. Such conflicts between the two often put a hamper in the investigations of the Nightstalkers, leading to Abigail at one point transferring Curtis to the location of a witch doctor in order to find a semblance of peace between him and his brother. While they do have their arguments, they care for one another deeply in the end, often leading to them having confessions about what made them so embittered towards the other and strengthening their bond. Additionally, there have been moments where they throw witty one-liners and comebacks at each other and towards others with Daniel being more lighthearted and Curtis being dry and cynical.
Powers and Abilities[]
As a human, Curtis lacks any special abilities but after merging with his brother's ghost he gains a variety of abilities normally attributed to ghosts. The ectoplasm in question takes the form of a living white and black substance (that is spiritual and magical in makeup) that can be manipulated by either Curtis or Daniel. Curtis is engulfed with the ectoplasm but has to share his body with Daniel. Curtis seems to be the "captain" and Daniel the second in command. Daniel will sometimes guide his brother but Curtis takes over during fights and risky situations. Even then, when accessing his brother's abilities as a ghost, Curtis is quite the formidable and deadly opponent.
Among his powers is that he can turn his body intangible to pass through walls or other solid matter. Curtis can also turn portions of his body intangible as well, and he can also turn other people or objects intangible when in contact with them. Humans may experience a slight tingling sensation when turned intangible. It is also shown that Curtis can manipulate gravity to a certain extent but only around the space of his body. Example was when he was thrown out a window, Daniel prevented his doom by decreasing the gravity of mass around him to have him hover above the ground momentarily. When coated in his ectoplasmic form he is capable of flight. He can also use this ability to walk on walls as he was running away from several Illuminati vampires, he ran around the walls and ceiling of the hallway to disorient his opponents' line of fire. He also has telekinesis like any ghost and can throw large objects and people at great distances. He can even stop bullets from being fired at him though it takes immense concentration to perform that. Curtis can also have Daniel possess others and when leaving the body, the subject has no memory of what he or she had done but only to what Daniel allows them to recall.
In terms of attacks, mainly when he assumes his ectoplasmic form, Curtis can channel the spiritual energies of the spirit world and unleash them in the form of concussive green energy blasts. He can fire these blasts from his hands, eyes, and mouth and are shown to powerful enough to harm the likes of Seras Victoria who is a very powerful vampire in her own right. He can manipulate the shape of the energy into spheres, rings, or waves. He can even charge the energy into the environment such as the wall or ground causing them to combust in an omnidirectional attack. However, he can only use these abilities sparingly. As typical of a ghost, Curtis's presence lowers the temperature of the room he is in. In the beginning both he and his brother were unable control it, but as they learned to hone their powers it was no issue. Additionally, they can project this thermokinetic ability by freezing their opponents in an icey state. Another natural ability of being a ghost, Curtis can see, sense, and speak to the dead but he can only speak to the remnants of the dead, to which he explains are like the "shadows" of ghosts who have been taken by Death. He can, however, use his powers to materialize a scene detailing the possible scenario of how a murder went down. He also has photokinesis, though he demonstrated this ability only once when he unleashed a blinding ray of light from his mouth to blind Seras who had him in a chokehold.
His greatest ability is a powerful sonic wail where he can generate an extremely powerful sonic blast of pure ecto-energy from his mouth that can destroy buildings and cause severe damage to both humans and other supernatural beings alike. It is also effective against multiple targets, or against a very powerful enemy, and almost nothing can withstand this attack. Although this attack is severely taxing for Curtis's body and as such can only use it sparingly when they are out of options. In spite of his extensively wide assortment of power, Curtis in the end is a mortal man attached to a ghost. It is said that should Curtis's body perish then Daniel will return to locket. He cannot attach himself to another person for it was said by the witch doctor that a spirit summoned by the Heart Stone can only claim a body of its blood, meaning only a member of the family can be worthy vessels for the ghost who belongs to said family. Daniel must also not be away from Curtis for an extended period of time, for the longer he is away the more he will be dragged back to Curtis's body with the latter having no control over it.
