Cronus' Sickle

The sickle.

Cronus' Sickle, also known as the Bronze Scythe, Sickle of Time, is the symbol of power for Cronus, the king of the Titans.

Overview[]

After seeing the abuse her husband Ouranos would inflict upon their children, the Earth mother-goddess Gaia forged a bronze sickle and offered it to any of her Titan children who would dare to wield it against Ouranos. Only Cronus, the youngest, but the bravest and craftiest agreed to do so. While Ouranos was ambushed and held down by Hyperion, Iapetus, Krios, and Koios, Cronus brutally castrated his father with the sickle, and proceeded to slice him into a thousand pieces. After the Titanomachy, the sickle was used by Zeus, Cronus' son, to cut his father to pieces as well.

The learned Alexandrian poet Callimachus reported that the bloodied sickle had been buried in the earth at Zancle in Sicily, but the Romanized Greek traveller Pausanias was informed that the sickle had been thrown into the sea from the cape near Bolina, not far from Argyra on the coast of Achaea, whereas the historian Timaeus claims to have located the sickle at Corcyra were Corcyrans claimed to be descendants of the wholly legendary Phaeacians visited by Odysseus, and by circa 500 BCE one Greek mythographer, Acusilaus, was claiming that the Phaeacians had sprung from the very blood of Ouranus' castration.

Appearance[]

The sickle is described as being an dark bronze blade curved like a crescent moon, with a thick handle wrapped in leather. The blade of the sickle is made from a mix of materials, mainly tempered steel and Celestial Bronze. It is also shown that the sickle can shift its size in order to properly fit in the hands of those who wield it. For example, when wielded by a human, the sickle will shrink down to a become 6 feet long, but when held by a Titan, it becomes massive and quite imposing, with the weapon having been 250 feet long when it was wielded by Cronus.

Capabilities[]

Cronus' weapon is extremely powerful in its own right, surpassed only by a sparse few other mighty weapons. Within the Greek pantheon, only the iconic weapons of his three Olympian sons are able to contend with the Sickle of Time.

This weapon's legendary status is owed to its ability to harm and possibly defeat Primordial beings, as is evidenced by it being used to battle and dismember Ouranos who was the Primordial god of the skies. Seeing that it was also used to dismember Cronus himself, it is also considered capable of defeating Titans, even one as powerful as the Titan king himself. Although the sickle is unable to completely extinguish the lifeforce of a being such as a these, it is one of the very few weapons in existence that Zeus himself fears, for it can even rip immortality itself away from a majority of gods spawned by the primordials, thus making it possible to kill them.

While similar in power to Death's Scythe it is nowhere near as powerful as the latter, which is capable of killing even the primordials. Despite these shortcomings, the dismemberment of a primordial, even if it still lives, is often enough to stop their reign of destruction for hundreds if not thousands of years, as only a few have ever managed to reassemble from the damage inflicted by this legendary sickle.

The sickle is in fact later revealed to be so powerful that it is even capable of severing the threads of time itself, consequently erasing a certain event, moment, or even an entire course from the archives of time, though only the most powerful entities have been able to manifest this ability with the sickle. It is believed this ability has been used by Time at least once to delay the premature arrival of the End Times, narrowly avoiding a temporal catastrophe.
