The Convergence
The Convergence, also known as the Conjunction of the Spheres, is a cosmic event that occurs every 1,000 or 1,500 years where the borders between the natural and the supernatural are so thin it allows entities and unnatural events to crossover onto our own dimension.
Description[]
During the Convergence, the realms that are connected to the branches of the World Tree come into alignment. This alignment causes the dimensional boundaries between each realm to become thin, resulting in various physical and hyper dimensional anomalies occurring at random. The alignment is mostly due to the fact that the branches are attempting to reinstate themselves in their proper positions and given that the contrast of time between Heaven and the material plane is vastly different, each second the branches move is akin to that of a hundred or so years in Earth time.
These phenomena include shifts in gravity, spatial extrusions, and the fabric of reality potentially tearing apart. Perhaps most notably, invisible wormholes that allow matter to move between realms seemingly open and close at random. From a cosmological standpoint, the realms resemble universal disks and from a certain perspective it looks as that these dimensional disks are aligned from across one another, and so close that a mere "brush" between these realms allows the inhabitants to cross over.
The Convergence was said to be the cause of what came to be known as the Dark Ages and according to the notes taken by Johanna Constantine, an ancestor of John Constantine, she believes the Conjunction of the Spheres took effect likely around the time of when the Roman Empire was split into two separate kingdoms that being the Byzantine Empire and the Nilfgaardian Empire. At the time, the effects of the Convergence trapped many "unnatural" creatures in this dimension, including ghouls, graveirs, and other unnatural beasts or entities. Rifts were created by the collision of many different realms, filling the world of the gnomes and dwarves with hundreds of creatures of all shapes and sizes. Due to the dangerous effects of the Convergence, it is usually treated as more of a cataclysm than something to behold.
History[]
Misaligned Roots[]
The cause of the Convergence was believed to be due to the Scarlet King's tampering with one of the branches from the Tree of Life after he devoured his Sentinel siblings and launched an omnicidal mission to destroy all creation. The Scarlet King reached the Tree of Life only to be met with resistence in the form the archangel Michael armed with his Lance. Their battle shook the foundations of reality due to it being beneath the Tree and the effects of their fight resulted in misalignments across the roots thus creating the Convergence.
Tower of Babel[]
The Convergence was first discovered by Nimrod who was considered to be the first ruler over a united humanity and was also a Gibborim. Nimrod, upon understanding through the usage of the knowledge left behind by his divine ancestors, commissioned the building of a mighty tower that acts as a tunnel which passes through the open tears of reality due to the chaos of the Convergence. The Tower of Babel's construction was overseen by the united hand of all humanity, and its otherworldly elements would allow it to interconnect with the Axis Mundi and in turn let the human race pass through the Firmament unharmed.
Mundus' Invasion[]
The event occurred again roughly around the time when Mundus intended to conquer the worlds. Feeling unsatisfied with his then rule over Hell, Mundus' ambitions were said to have surpassed his judgement. As such, he awaited for the coming of the Conjunction and when it began, Mundus had Mulciber craft the Seven Gates of Hell across the seven continents of the world.
The gates in question would act as conduits for the dimensional energy that would run amok through the main plane of reality, opening a portal to the Infinite Corridor which in turn would allow the demons of Hell safe passage through the gates' Corridor and unto the Earth. However, this came with disastrous consequences, for Beelzebub stated that had it not been for Sparda destroying the Gates, the excess of energy would have caused the realms to collapse unto the Earth and Hell itself.
New World Order[]
The Convergence was revealed to be instrumental for Lucifer's plan to have the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil pierce through the Heavens and then all of creation. The event would have the branches of existence into alignment which would give Lucifer the opportunity to raise the Tree of Knowledge through the Firmament and its roots and branches through the Axis Mundi across all the aligning realms and subsequently all of creation. It is also the reason why the Illuminati where biding their time until that appropriate moment to strike in all their terrible glory.
