Cipactli was an Aztec primordial sea monster from whose mutilated body was used to fashion the lands of Mesoamerica.
Description[]
Cipactli is known as the primordial beast slayed by the god Tezcatlipoca in the Aztec version of the Chaoskampf. It is a crocodile creature with toad and fish-like features, rumored to be a forgotten child of Tiamat the Mesopotamian goddess of the chaotic oceans and saltwater.
History[]
Genesis[]
In the beginning, the universe was just a giant empty void hovering over primordial ocean that was home to the primordial titans. Cipactli was believed to have been among the many draconic beings that sprung from Tiamat herself when she was slain by Marduk. Much like its siblings, Cipactli was a plague upon creation itself for whenever the gods made anything, it would fall into the ocean and Cipactli would devour it completely.
Sacrifice of Tezcatlipoca[]
The gods were forced to come up with a plan that involved Tezcatlipoca luring Cipactli to the surface by using his leg as bait. This resulted in the deity losing the limb in the process, but in turn the four gods attacked and killed Cipactli, afterwards turning his body into the earth. However, Cipactli was revealed to have not truly perished, forcing the gods to propose a vow, a vow that involves the offer of blood sacrifices continually, lest he return to wreak havoc upon them once again.
