The Belmont Clan, or the House of Belmont, is an important and prominent clan of hunters, mainly known for continuously fighting and destroying the dreaded vampires and are also known for defeating Dracula himself at some point.
Overview[]
Their clan was founded by the former baron Leon Belmont for the purpose of protecting the innocent from the malevolent creatures of the night. They had allies in the Apostles of Hecate, Knights of the Round Table (an offshoot of the Hellsing Organization) and the Legendary Dark Knight himself, Sparda. The Belmonts are widely recognized as among the greatest vampire hunters in the world.
Since the 11th century, the Belmonts are entrusted with the duty of destroying various creatures of the night. For this purpose they use as their main weapon the sacred whip known as the Lux Whip, which has the power to destroy any entity of darkness, and is also said to have the power to destroy the King of the Vampires himself. They also use other weapons to accomplish this, which coupled alongside their skill and power made them formidable enemies of the creatures of darkness.
History[]
Background[]
The Belmont Clan was not formed with the purpose of destroying creatures of the night until when Leon Belmont vowed to hunt the night. It was in the same time period that the Lux Whip, the Belmonts' primary weapon, was created. Leon Belmont is the founder of the clan's tradition of vampire hunting and also the first known wielder of the whip in its complete form and the first to battle Hector van Neck. Despite Leon's prowess, he could not defeat the Lasombra, as Hector was far stronger than any ordinary vampire but nonetheless managed to escape before Leon can do anything to stop him. He was a knight once, but left his knighthood to pursue his betrothed's kidnappers who intended to use her blood to raise a great vampire god. After his efforts, the Belmonts' sole duty became protecting the people from darkness.
The first Belmont to fight Dracula was Sonia Belmont who later on mothered a son named Trevor Belmont. Sonia was born in a remote mountain village located in Transylvania. One night, when Sonia was seventeen years old, she encountered a young man named Mihail. The two formed a bond together. However, tragedy suddenly struck as the mansion where Sonia was raised was attacked by grotesque monsters serving Dracula.
Dracula's War[]
The Vampire King had been invading European countries one by one with his army of monsters. He did this out of revenge as his wife and son were executed by those of Christian faith; later revealed to be a ploy created by Absalom. Sonia found her grandfather, mortally wounded during Dracula's attack on Targoviste. Her grandfather told her that it was time for her to take the mantle. Sonia took her grandfather's whip as a memento in her hand, setting out to Dracula's castle. Sonia traveled across the Transylvanian countryside, all while destroying several of the Vampire King's legions until finally reaching the No-Life King's castle. But unfortunately was unable to truly defeat Dracula and she too was wounded deeply as a result though Dracula was impressed with her skills.
The Belmonts showed great power in fighting back against Dracula's forces and this led to the people of Wallachia fearing them partly due to the church convincing the denizens they use black magic which attracts these creatures to them in the first place. Due to this, they were banished and lived away from civilization for a long time, until 1476 when Dracula began to his make his way towards the Ottoman Empire. At this time, no other person, man or woman, was able to stand up against Dracula's forces. Ingeras, seeing that his father was too far gone, was left with no choice but to find a Belmont as he knew the church would not provide their aid, which proved to be a difficult task as he could not find one anywhere in Wallachia. His search gave results, however, when he heard a youth who went by the name of Trevor Belmont.
The Hunter, the Knight, and the Speaker[]
Ingeras would search for the fabled "Hunter, Knight, and Speaker" and after a long search finally located the "hunter" who was Trevor Belmont though the latter was a broken shell of his former self. It was not long until Trevor and Ingeras encountered a woman by the name of Sypha Belnades, who was not only a Cathari and the "speaker" of the prophecy, but who would also soon become the wife of Trevor. Sypha revealed to Ingeras that she too was aware of the prophecy involving a "Hunter, Knight, and Speaker" and also sought them out. Finally, they came across the "knight" who was none other than the Dark Knight himself, Sparda, who was in the midst of his travels and hibernated to restore his diminished powers. However, Sparda and Trevor had a rather turbulent relationship due to Sparda being a demon though it gradually began to soften due to Sypha and Ingeras being a medium between the two men. Sypha sought out both Trevor and Sparda due to a prophecy foretold to her as well as Sparda, who knew of this prophecy from an Oracle, regarding a "Hunter, Knight, and Speaker". Eventually, the three were able to find a compromise and work together as a team to destroy the forces of darkness that stood in their way of defeating Dracula.
After raiding Dracula's castle and destroying his top generals and most of his armies, they confronted the Vampire King himself. However, in the midst of the fight, they discovered that Dracula had been under the influence of the Vampire God, Absalom. Absalom was able to manipulate Dracula into killing thousands of humans and harvesting their blood in order to perform the ritual of bringing Absalom back to the mortal plane. While they managed to halt the ritual, Absalom forced Dracula to consume the remaining reserves of blood and providing him with more than enough power to defeat the three heroes with a portion of Absalom's power added to his own. After a long and arduous battle, Trevor, Sypha, and Sparda defeated Dracula, with Ingeras having to tragically deal the killing blow as Dracula's love for his son still lingered enough for him to subdue Absalom's influence over him and allow his son to destroy him. After this display of heroism, the Belmonts were hailed as heroes, with Ingeras now as the new voivode of Wallachia, granted the Belmonts amnesty and allowed them to live among the people once more alongside Sparda and the rest of Sypha's coven. Dracula's whereabouts, however, were unknown as he was believed to have perished after a devastating final attack from the trio.
Powers and Abilities[]
The Belmonts are widely regarded as the mightiest clan of vampire hunters in the world, acknowledged even by other powerful hunting clans. Initially, the Belmonts did not possess any supernatural powers, until later descendants developed the ability to perform magical powers due to Trevor Belmont's marriage with Sypha Belnades. This magical power is perhaps most prominent in Juste Belmont, as he uses spell books to empower his sub-weapons.
Many have mentioned and acknowledged the power of the Belmont bloodline, among them being the Legendary Dark Knight himself who was familiar with their exploits and was impressed by their skill and capabilities to extinguish the most fearsome of unholy beasts despite being just human. In fact, Sparda's acknowledgement and respect towards the Belmonts is evident when he duelled against Richter Belmont due to wanting to see first hand if Richter is truly worthy of upholding his family's name, and while Richter was defeated, Sparda praised him for his exemplary strength and skill. Furthermore, the Belmonts were exiled because their powers were seen as fearsome by the people of Wallachia. However, it has not been confirmed if the Belmonts have their own unique special power solely attributed to them (aside from the magical power of Sypha or not).
The Belmonts' primary weapon is the Lux Whip, an extremely powerful holy whip that is especially effective against evil and unholy creatures, such as vampires. Its full power can only be used without any consequences by a full-blooded member of the Belmont Clan. The Belmonts have also used sub-weapons as their other means to attack and they are generally very skilled in combat, whether it be with the Vampire Killer or sub-weapons.
