Arwassa
Arwassa, also known as the Silent Shouter on the Hill, is one of the Ogdru Hem and the first to have been encountered by a young Hellboy.
Description[]
Arwassa possessed a neck which ended in aught but a wailing, toothless maw, a human-like torso, and that in place of regular limbs it had long, grasping, tentacular appendages.
Overview[]
Arwassa is one of the many Old Ones that was able to survive the purge that was committed by the gods after their battle against the more powerful Ogdru Hem. Arwassa's activities were not fully disclosed but what is known is that it became active sometime around the second millennium where it haunted the castles and stockades of Europe as its uncanny cries driving those unfortunate enough to have been garrisoned there stark raving mad.
The Silent Shouter had its fair share of encounters with many famous individuals throughout history, among of which was King Arthur himself and several members of his Round Table Knights who mistook the Old One for the fabled Questing Beast. Gawain, a knight belonging to Arthur's round table, was said to have nearly been driven mad by Arwassa's cries during his travel to the Green Castle to meet up with the Green Knight.
Perhaps its most well-known encounter was with Hellboy himself, or rather his parentage. Even though Hellboy was underdeveloped in his mother's womb, it was still enough for Arwassa to be drawn to Sarah Hughes through the unborn cambion. Sarah's children found favor with several Mages who were able to repel Arwassa from going near their mother for three nights, but while they managed to stave off Arwassa and its influence they could do not do so against Hellboy's father Azazel. Arwassa would meet with Hellboy for the first time during his early days within the B.P.R.D. where he fiercely fought the Old One and managed to slay it.
