Andariel, known as the Maiden of Anguish, is one of the Maleficar and the youngest of the four ancient evils. She is also the sister of Dormammu and is instrumental in preparing for his inevitable return.
Appearance[]
Andariel is humanoid in appearance but has prominent demonic features. A notable example are her legs which are shown to be bipedal and have reptilian scales with cloven hooves instead of feet. She has dark grey skin with demonic markings running horizontally across her body. She often wears little clothing which consists of a simple loin cloth that covers her nether regions or a loose but torn dress. Her hair is a blood red and moves as if it were made of fire.
History[]
Background[]
Andariel was created by the Prime Evils in Tartarus and was the last to emerge. She was created with the same material used to create Dormammu and is thus considered to be a 'fraternal' twin of Dormammu. Andariel was a close confident of Dormammu and while she aided in him advancing his plans, it is rumored that Andariel only did this out of her own self-interest and that whatever may emerge of the aftermath would benefit her greatly especially more so than what Dormammu may attain in the long run.
Much like the rest of the Maleficar, Andariel was among those who came to be discontent with the Prime Evils keeping many secrets from the Great Evils, but furthermore, the Prime Evils appeared more interested in swaying humanity to their cause. This caused the Great Evils to question the authority of the Three as the Great Ones either wanted to outright destroy humanity or enslave them. She and Dormammu conspired against them separately with Dormammu seeking to obtain power that would surpass the might of his masters and Hell while also sharing it with Andariel.
However, the other Maleficar viewed the the siblings as a threat to where once they gather enough power to slay the current rulers of Hell they would have not just the Primes but the other Maleficar be subservient to him. As a result, they betrayed Dormammu's location in Hell, alerting Beelzebub who quickly set the Balrogs upon him then banished Dormammu far beyond the darkness of the Abyss where he would forever wander the Void. Andariel, however, managed to escape Hell's wrath while also swearing vengeance against the Maleficar that betrayed them of their plans. Andariel hid herself upon Earth, biding her time in order for the proper set pieces to be in place and thus free her brother from his current prison.
Dormammu's Aid[]
At some point in time, a Necromancer whose original name was lost to time was visited by Andariel, and with the knowledge and power bestowed to him, the Necromancer was renamed Drath Mephruhn, a powerful lich. At Dormammu's behest, Andariel informed Drath Mephruhn of the Conjunction of the Spheres, a celestial event which only occurs once every 1,000 years where the realms that lay behind the veil from the land of man overlap and allow otherworldly creatures to emerge. Drath Mephruhn learned that by manipulating the celestial alignment to some degree he could allow Dormammu access to the material spheres of man and beast.
But Drath Mephruhn's activities caught the alert of the Apostles of Hecate who, after an arduous battle, defeated Drath Mephruhn's by obliterating his body and took extra precautions by destroying the Phylactery that contained portions of his soul. However, they did not realize that other phylacteries of Drath Mephruhn laid hidden with the former branded kings who now became the Ringed Wraiths. Andariel would use the Ringed Wraiths to spread out and further advance Dormammu's schemes all while discreetly having them perform tasks exclusive only to her without Dormammu's knowledge.
Despite the setback, Andariel continued to aid Dormammu as she and the Ringed Wraiths were set out to search for others that would be more than willing to continue Drath Mephruhn's work. Much later, they recruited Sylas and Amara Briarwood who harnessed hundreds of souls to feed Drath Mephruhn's phylacteries in order to reconstitute his body and continue the arcane ritual which would bring Dormammu unto Earth.
