Ananke
Ananke, also known as the Weaver, is a Primordial being (and personification) of order, compulsion and necessity that takes the shape of a cosmic arachnid.
Description[]
As a Primordial being, Ananke has no definitive form but ancient Greeks depicted her as a torch-bearing, winged figure right is labelled with her name. However, her soldiers known as the Ananasi say that she resembles a cosmic spider who takes charge of weaving and maintaining the Web of the Wyrd.
One belief that is widely held among her children and avatars is that Ananke has a major influence over the modern world as it stands which ranges from skyscrapers, cities, and the internet.
Ananke also bore the Fates and the Norns with Time, as she is thought to be the only being outside of God and Destiny of the Endless to influence their decisions. It is also said that the silk she produces is used as the material for the Book of Life's pages. According to Schowalter and Friesen, she and the Fates "are all sufficiently tied to early mythologies."
Overview[]
Ananke's origins are unknown but some sources state that she was created by God to weave out the tapestries of destiny and necessities of all living things in creation into an orderly fashion whereas it would be led down to its final destination that being death or destruction itself. Ananke would work in conjunction with Mekhane, one of the Sentinels of Creatio and the goddess of machines, to construct an elaborate yet infinitely complex machine that's sole function is to turn the wheels and cogs of creation's principles in a presentable manner.
Just as Mekhane developed a rivalry with Yaldabaoth due to the stark contrast and opposing forces they embody, Ananke had one with Níðhöggr who would destroy or dismantle the tapestries of a life thread when it was at the end of its life cycle. Ananke was tired of Níðhöggr's seemingly senseless destruction of its creation and so with the help of Marduk opted to imprison the Death Wyrm within the darkest roots of the Tree of Life. But Níðhöggr did not take too kindly for this and thus sparked a seemingly eternal struggle that would span throughout the infinite realms and its inhabitants where order and chaos are locked in constant quarrels and struggles for survival.
Ananke's threads also separate the physical world from the spiritual as another means of maintaining the balance since Ananke fears that those who would be corrupted by the Demiurge would attempt to cross over through the Web of the Wyrd and gain access to these spiritual realms that are nested within the Tree of Life. Aside from Níðhöggr, Ananke is also enemies with the Old One known as Atlach-Nacha who sought to throw the Collective Unconscious into chaos by weaving a web that acts as a bridge between the Dreamlands and the waking world. It is believed that when the web is complete, the end of the world will come. This is part of the purpose behind the Ananasi's creation who prevent this oncoming destruction by fighting Atlach-Nacha's Spiders of Leng.
