A close-up of the Alukah.
The Alukah is a vampiric leech-like creature in Jewish mythology which made its way to Mongolia. Its native name, Olgoi-Khorkhoi, means "intestine worm".
Description[]
The Alukah have a red blood-like color, and size, which is the size of an intestine. It has been described by many to be from 2-7 feet long, have the ability to spit out a corrosive yellow saliva and to generate blasts of electricity. However, this latter power is thought of as being folkloric by the nomads of the Gobi. Some have suggested it might be a skink, but they have little legs and scaly skin whereas witness accounts specify the Alukah is limb-less and smooth bodied.
Overview[]
Because Mongolia had been under Soviet control until 1990, very little was known about the Alukah in the West. Nobody is entirely sure what the Alukah actually is. Experts are certain it is not a vampire because the Gobi Desert is too hot an area for a vampire to survive. Even so, they would acquire information from Mongolian nomads who believe the Alukah covers its prey with an acidic substance that turns everything a corroded yellow color. Legend says that as the creature begins to attack it raises half its body out of the sand and starts to inflate until it explodes, releasing the lethal poison all over the unfortunate victim. The poison is so venomous that the prey dies instantly.
While livestock and humans are supposed to be its main prey, it was discovered by researchers at both the Federal Bureau of Control and Miskatonic University that the Alukah also feeds on Chthonian eggs which made them parasitic in nature for these massive worm-like primeval creatures. Sometimes, when an Alukah gets bold, it can burrow within the flesh of a Chthonian and devour it from inside.
