Aaxte
Aatxe is a spirit in the folk Basque mythology of the Basque people. His name is literally translated as "Young Bull", and he is sometimes known as Etsai.
Description[]
He is a cave-dwelling spirit who adopts the form of a young red bull. Due to being a shapeshifter, he sometimes takes the shape of a man.
Overview[]
At night, more so in stormy weather, he arises from the hollow which is his lair. As agents of the divine, one of Aatxe's roles is that of a guardian spirit, especially over the treasures of the Earth. For this reason, he often resides within mountain caves, caverns, and hollows.
He attacks criminals and other malevolent people, though Aatxe is more than a punisher of the wicked. He also helps protect morally upstanding people by warning them when danger is near. He is theorized to be a representative of the goddess Mari, or an enforcer of her will, punishing people who cheat her.
